Happy New Year! January is here and the holiday period is coming to an end. It’s time to do something amazing with your recharged batteries. What have you promised yourself for your new year’s resolutions? Going back to the gym? Quit smoking? Make that move in your career that you’ve been thinking about for a long time? Whatever the promise, we sure are feeling positive about 2023!
For a lot of people in recent years, learning a new language has been at the top of this list. However, it’s not always followed through! You know what they say, if at first, you don’t succeed, try and try again.
2022 was a whirlwind of a year for the world. Argentina won the World Cup in one of the best matches ever televised. Queen Elizabeth II passed away and King Charles I became king. The world opened up after the pandemic and most of us got to travel again. Putin sends troops into Ukraine with devastating effects. Elon Musk buys Twitter. And… Will Smith slaps Chris Rock?
For Everywhere English, our efforts were and continue to be with the Ukraine community. We focused on teaching English to Ukrainians on a volunteer and business level in Ireland. This has been an amazing experience for our teachers and they have learned as much from our students as they have from us. We continue to support the Ukrainian community as much as we can.
If your New Year’s resolution is to learn English for 2023, then you’ve come to the right place! If your looking to learn a new language, but not sure if it should be English, keep reading! We’re going to tell you why:
English is the “Lingua Franca”. This means it’s the common language used in international trade. If you are trying to do business with an overseas client who doesn’t speak your mother tongue, chances are that you’ll both use English to communicate with one another. In other words, English isn’t only used for English-speaking countries, but for all businesses that don’t speak your language. Your market will end up being the world!
Every platform, website, code, and ALT text has 80% of it written in English. If you work for or own an online business, the English language is your best friend. You actually won’t get further than domestic work without it! On top of that, if you’re an influencer or blogger, you’ll need to know English to be able to reach Kylie Jenner ratings!
If you’re planning to travel this year, English is a must. Every hotel, restaurant, and bar in the world (with some remote exceptions!) speaks their native language and English. Speaking English will help you travel more smoothly, especially if you encounter any trouble abroad. This works as well if you are in the tourism industry, English is mostly a requirement for employees. Sometimes, conversational English is not enough. You’ll need to know negotiating in English, diplomatic English, and industry-specific English (all of which we can help with!).
Learning a new language is no easy feat! You may have done it before. Maybe in school or online or with a teacher. But, how do we get the motivation to go again? Here’s how:
This is the first thing you’ll need to do! Set your goal for next Christmas. What can you achieve in a year? Where is your English level right now? Why do you want to learn English? Is it for work or for personal reasons? Once you know the answers to these questions, you can start setting your goals. If you don’t know your level of English, please contact us for a one-to-one English level test. For reference, here’s a quick table to see how long it takes to learn English. Make sure to add in your class time, homework time, and movies/podcasts in English you intend to do in 2023.
Level of English (CEFR) | Number of hours of instruction |
Zero to A1 | 70 hours |
A1 to A2 | 150 hours |
A2 to B1 | 300 hours |
B1 to B2 | 200 hours |
B2 to C1 | 200 hours |
C1 to C2 | 200 hours |
Once you have your goal set, make out your monthly goals and make sure to add in some breaks for holidays in the summer and family time during the holiday seasons. This way you won’t fall behind and get demotivated.
The best way to do any task is to give yourself a schedule. Remember that tomorrow never comes! This is an English proverb meaning that when technically when it’s tomorrow, it’s actually today, so “I’ll do it tomorrow” is unlikely to happen. Stick to the schedule! Even if you are busy and you can only schedule 2 hours a week, it’s better to have one.
A few tips for the ultimate schedule include:
